RB was born in a very rocky, desolate and remote part of the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia, Canada. Her community was similar to Anne of Green Gables. She spent her summers in a small fishing community hanging out in her grandparents general store surrounded by relatives and friendly neighbours learning the old ways of living. The rest of the time, she lived on a point of land named after her ancestors. Her love of nature and history as well as love of young people never left her and she now use her skills and talents to create books for children and adults based on her own experiences.
Having been a single mother herself and a trained Public-School Program Assistant, with Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, cabinet making certificates, and TESOL training, RB creates the factual picture books she would have liked to read to her own son and students.
Passion for learning new things and exploring new places has led RB to many unexpected parts of the world such as Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, the Amazon rain forest of Ecuador as well as the wilds of Northern British Columbia, Canada. What she writes and illustrates is based on direct personal experiences including her first children's book, Lake of the Spirit Bear, which is where she lived with her son for a time. All the illustrations RB did in this book were directly from photographs and true situations.
Her writing of children's picture books are carefully crafted with an intent and purpose sometimes not fitting the norms and conventional ideas about what children's books should be like. She has done this on purpose, making the book accessible to children of a variety of ages and reading levels from the gifted to struggling teenager or someone learning a new language.
For this reason, her "Educational Ecological Wilderness-Living Series" do not have traditional covers and are meant to be not age or gender specific allowing anyone to carry around such a fun fact filled non-fiction picture book.
Artist/illustrator, educator, writer, world explorer or just plain ole "Mom", RB is content to write and create books she hopes children of all ages will enjoy and learn from in an interesting and entertaining way while supporting her belief children should never be underestimated.
This love of writing she is also carrying on into a series of murder mysteries set in her maritime home bridging the gap between the new and the old which shall be coming soon.
Although she is taking her time with this murder mystery series, it is not far from her thoughts and she often uses her current life experiences as well as past ones to help aid her in developing the characters and their dynamics. Whether it is the observations while WOOFING and living in various places, or while working with Individuals with special needs or co-workers, or just sitting in a coffee shop (which she LOVES to do watching and chatting with folks!), RB is always thinking how this could be used somewhere in her writing.

Artist/writer educator, world explorer or just plain ole “Mom”
Although she had learned the mechanics of drawing at an early age, while taking an online course at age 13 she realized she needed to work on the creative side of it all so she dedicated her time to not only learning new skills however also developing her inspiration which she did exploring both different techniques as well as subject matters while taking workshops all over her home province of Nova Scotia. She later went on to get her 4 year Bachelor's of Fine Art Degree at NSCAD with a major in studio which allowed her to try numerous mediums and learn in more depth colour theory, life drawing as well as photography, animation, computer design, sculpture, painting, print making, stone carving, clay work, etc.
RB has worked in the art field for many years both as an educator or privately selling. Her gallery work with Inuit art/artists and working as personal assistant to the late Alma Houston (who was dubbed "The First Lady of Inuit Art") had a great impact on her style and subject matter. Of all the commissions of the years, both landscape and figures, she loves doing animals and children the best of all.
Although her work can be quite abstract in form, she still loves the "painterly" qualities of oil paint and enjoys doing more traditional paintings following the teachings of some of the older school teachers.
